External Costs
In an earlier entry, I mentioned the need for tax code reform in Utah.
The LDS church encourages members to have large numbers of children (and they do) which costs society money to educate and provide services for. Since LDS members tend to marry and have children younger, their income is much smaller, meaning they are more likely to require some form of welfare.
Yet the LDS church pays no taxes on the land it owns (and it owns a rather large chunk of Utah land). In Utah, this money would go to fund education.
Ironic?
